About Mount Cain Provincial Park

Mount Cain Provincial Park, located on northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia, encompasses steep mountainous terrain dominated by Mount Cain, which rises to 1,819 meters (5,969 feet). The park protects diverse ecosystems ranging from coastal temperate rainforests at lower elevations to alpine meadows and rocky outcrops near the summit. Old-growth western red cedar, Douglas fir, and western hemlock forests cover much of the lower park area, providing critical habitat for wildlife such as black bears, cougars, and a variety of bird species. The park is historically significant for its connection to regional forestry and outdoor recreation development. Today, Mount Cain is well known for its ski hill operated by the local ski community, which offers a variety of alpine and cross-country skiing opportunities. Outside of winter, the park draws hikers and wildlife enthusiasts attracted by its panoramic views of the Beaufort Range and distant Mount Waddington. Key recreation opportunities include challenging backcountry hiking, snow sports, wildlife watching, and photography. The park's rugged terrain appeals to visitors seeking solitude and a less developed outdoor experience compared to more heavily visited areas on Vancouver Island. Accessibility is through logging roads and limited signage, making preparation and navigation skills important. Mount Cain Provincial Park remains a favored destination for locals and visitors who appreciate its natural beauty, expansive views, and outdoor recreation possibilities throughout all seasons.
